Dear HR,

What is reverse mentoring and its benefits?
-Mr. Program Placer

Dear Mr. Program Placer,

Thank you for the question. Administering a mentoring program in the workplace offers various advantages. Both the mentors and mentees can gain job satisfaction and enhanced morale. Employees that participate in the program may also develop their work, team collaboration, and leadership skills. Also, it can improve their capability of understanding their coworker’s perspectives. The mentoring program can essentially provide value in the recruiting process and retention aspect.

Even if your company already has a mentoring program, there’s another form that your enterprise can also use and still benefit from called reverse mentoring, being the opposite of what a regular mentoring program is. In the structure of reverse mentoring, usually, the mentor is the younger employee whereas the more experienced employee is the mentee (but may not possess the skill sets the younger employee has). For example, new hires may be more familiar with certain skills, such as grasping new software and various technological skills, that may be less instinctive for the employees with greater senority.
