Dear HR,

Is talking about politics at work a bad idea? What are some ways to impede it?
-Mr. Neutrality

Dear Mr. Neutrality,

Thank you for the question. To start off, there’s no benefit to your workers bringing up politics in the workplace. Individual politics originate from our very own experiences. Some people can get extremely emotional and passionate about what they believe in; as a result, they may take things personally when someone else challenges their beliefs. With the arising strong divide between the Democratic and Republican parties, people may behave more negatively and harshly toward those who have opposing views. Especially during a year holding a major election, people may feel anxious about the opposing side winning it. In conclusion, talking about politics in the workplace may not be the best idea.

Political topics can steer conversations into a raging debate that can disrupt the positivity and productivity of a workplace. but offices should be a neutral place where every employee works in harmony to attain the company’s goals. Bringing politics into the workplace could deter employees from what actually matters, their common objectives. Rather, it would produce discord and harm relationships, create a hostile work environment, and cause some people to isolate from others. If this happens, efficiency and optimism will significantly drop.
